Merdeka means Independence in the Malay language. Malaysia
gained its Independence from the British on the 31st of August 1957.
This year also marked the 57th anniversary of our ‘Merdeka’, so the
number 57 is very significant to the patriotic Malaysians for this particular
year.
During the month of August till end of September, the
Malaysian flag known locally as the ‘Jalur Gemilang’ which, loosely translated,
means Stripes of Glory, can be seen literally everywhere, be it on a lamppost, stuck
on top of a car windscreen and also on government and private buildings. Why until
end of September, you may ask? Because Malaysians have another significant national
event happening on the 16th of September, when the states of Sabah
and Sarawak in Borneo were declared as part of Malaysia in 1963. The Most Honourable Yang Dipertuan Agong of Malaysia inspecting Guards of Honour |
